What is the Digital key and why do you need it?

1. Go to the official portal: Access the Autenticação.gov website.

2. Choose "Activate": If you have your ID card PIN (the one that came in the letter when you got your card), you can use it with a card reader. Alternatively, you can use your login details for the Tax Portal (Portal das Finanças).

3. Link your number: Follow the steps, confirm your mobile number via the SMS you receive, and set your 4 to 6-digit PIN.

Option B: Activate in person

If you prefer someone to do it for you, or if you don’t have your Tax Portal passwords handy, visit an Espaço Cidadão or a Loja de Cidadão. You just need to bring your ID document and your phone. In 5 minutes, you'll be out with your key ready to use.

3. Update your number: If you change your phone number, update your digital key on the portal immediately, otherwise you’ll be "locked out" of online services.
